Victory for Norden seconds over arch rivals Walsden seconds

Date published: 26 August 2014

Helmet in one hand, bat in the other, arms raised high, Rehan Udwadia signalled victory for Norden seconds over arch rivals Walsden seconds in the CLL’s Burton Cup final at Woodhouse Lane on Monday.

Udwadia batted superbly, with some classy shots, and it was he who hit the winning run as Norden reached their target of 181 with five wickets down.

The 14-year-old finished unbeaten on 43, but the man of the match was Dean Lord who hit 71 after earlier taking two wickets.

Lord ignored the pressure on him to slam eight fours and a six in an innings which put Stags well on their way to success.

The fact Norden had only 181 to chase down, instead of a 250 plus total which looked possible at one stage, was down to skipper Paul Morrell who bowled his way to four for 13 and also took three catches.

Morrell entered the attack late and instigated a Walsden collapse which saw them put on only 10 runs for the last six wickets.

Tpushed the total up to 146 before the latter was caught by Greg Tattersall.

Lord went on to score 59, Morrell ending his innings with a catch in the deep, and the collapse was under way.

Nordens’ reply didn’t start too well as Asif Saeed edged a delivery from Tyson Illingworth to Lord in the slips.

But Lord and Tattersall built a good base before Tattersall was caught for 20 with the total on 61.

Lord was out with 148 on the board, and Walsden enjoyed a brief spell as Steve Wild went without addition and Dom Humphreys was bowled for four.

That made it 162 for five, but the youthful Udwadia and the experienced Blair Patterson ensured there were no more slips by Stags.

The full Norden team was Asif Saeed, Dean Lord, Greg Tattersall, Rehan Udwadia, Steve Wild, Dom Humphreys, Blair Patterson, Paul Morrell, Phil Docker, Ross Collin, Adam Ahmed.
