Mayfield juggernaut powers on with 15 try demolition of Wigan St Jude

Date published: 21 October 2013

The Mayfield juggernaut powers on as they took their 12 match unbeaten run to the already promoted Wigan St Jude.

The game started in scintillating style as on the first set, the outstanding Jack Sampson took a third tackle offload from Jo Qanuici and raced 80 yards to score.

Lewis Sheridan missed the conversion but that was his last error of the afternoon, as the young scrum half tormented the opposition, scoring two tries and 11 goals for a man of the match performance.

The tries then came thick and fast through Paul Brearley, Rob Kershaw, Todd O'Brien, Matt Calland, Nick Hargreaves and this season's divisional top try scorer, Jo Qanuici.

The loudest cheer of the day went to 16-year-old Declan Sheridan. On at hooker in the second half, and in only his second appearance for the first team, Declan made an ominous start that indirectly led to St Jude's only try. Sheridan was determined to make amends and on the next set of Mayfield possession he took a Matty Moores offload 40 metres out and scored his first senior try in Mayfield colours.

Aiden Gleeson completed the scoring with two conversions on a glorious afternoon for Mayfield that was tainted only by the near miss in the promotion stakes.

For Mayfield it was a game they had to win to keep their slim hopes of promotion alive, and win they did, in some style, with open, flowing rugby league and tough, uncompromising defence, resulting in a 15 try demolition of the home side.

However, Mayfield's slim promotion hopes were dashed as Hunslet Warriors secured the home win they needed to pip Mayfield to third place by one competition point.

Mayfield finish the 2013 season on Thursday 24 October 2013 at home to Bradford Dudley Hill with a 7:30pm kick off.
