Rugby League: Two local players selected to play for their countries

Date published: 03 August 2018

Two local rugby league players have both been selected to play for their countries in the European Rugby League Under 19s Championships, which are to be held in Serbia this month.

Brandon Wood and Nico Rizzelli, who both play for Rochdale Mayfield and both attend and play for Hopwood Hall College, will fly to Serbia this week.

Wood, who lives in Heywood, has been selected to play for England Lions, said: “To get to play rugby for my country is an honour and a dream come true. I've been playing rugby since I was five years old and as I was growing up, rugby was something I loved, and I've always followed my dream. I hope I’ve made my family and friends proud."

Rizzelli, who also lives in Heywood, said: "I’m so happy to be selected for Italy; as this is a great opportunity and achievement. I’m glad I can play for my other half of the family, as this will make them so proud. I can’t wait to play against some great teams."

“Both these lads train hard and want it. They have both played at professional level, with Brandon formally at Bradford Bulls and Nico currently at Halifax, they are both a great addition to their country's squad.

“All of us at Mayfield wish them both the best of luck out there."
