Rugby League: Mayfield back on the road in search of more points in battle to avoid relegation

Date published: 02 August 2018

Mayfield are back on the road again on Saturday, as they travel to face Wigan St Pat's.

Mayfield are in their best form of the season with three wins from their last five outings including last week’s impressive victory at Kells.

Pat's have struggled all season, and have lost the last seven games they need a near miracle to save them from relegation.

Pat's will welcome Mayfield knowing this is an absolute must win game for them if they are to retain even the slightest hope of staying up.

They are team with the greatest of pedigree and will be looking at Mayfield’s recent change of fortune and taking heart in the knowledge that they too just need that one result to turn the season around.

Last week’s win saw the Mayfield forwards put in their best performance so far with ex Hornet, Matty Hadden proving to be just the player they were missing.

It was by no means a one man show it just seemed that Hadden’s inclusion was the catalyst the rest of the forwards needed. They were outstanding with Connolly and Brearley leading them round the pitch and the wily old Sam Butterworth adding that extra bit of flair to the backs.

What was also impressive about the game was the way the defence kept the huge Kells forwards away from the try line, a feat that only the undefeated Hunslet Parkside have managed this season.

Mayfield will need to apply all these factors to overcome St Pat's.

The Mayfield NWML travel to Cumbria where they will face Hindpool.

Hindpool are mid table and a win would see Mayfield go four points clear of Widnes Tigers at the top of the division with a game in hand.

Coach Craig White said: “'I am really pleased with the way the team has performed, especially in the second half of the season. When they have been up against it they have dug deep and shown that extra bit of quality every good side needs.

“We have had a mainly young side and if they gain promotion their future in the Premier Division will be bright for sure.”
