Rugby League: Saddleworth 10 - 50 Mayfield

Date published: 25 July 2018

Rochdale Mayfield’s Under 18s brought home the North West Counties Cup, after seeing off local rivals Saddleworth in the final at Clockface ARLFC in St Helen's on Sunday.

From the start Mayfield were on the front foot and regained possession from the kick off. From the resulting scrum, Mayfield’s full back Corey Newsham carried two would be defenders with him to score on the right, Cole Connolly converting, in what would be a good day with the boot.

Saddleworth to their credit settled the early nerves and levelled midway through the first half.

This stung Mayfield into life again as Jackson Kelly and Cole Connolly added scores either side of a Saddleworth try.

The humid conditions then seem to affect Mayfield as they became unsettled with themselves just before half time, with the game falling into a steady stream of referee stoppages.

Half time, Saddleworth 10 - 18 Mayfield

Mayfield started the second half much as they did the first.

Nico Rizzelli, punched a hole in the defence to score unopposed, Connolly again converting.

The tide seemed to be turning in Mayfield’s favour, with Wayne Bannister and his second-row partner, Hayden Lewis, causing havoc in the tiring Saddleworth defence.

This enabled Kelly and Brandon Wood to take advantage and both score a try.

The try of the day came as Mayfield set up field position with good work from Callum Glasgow and fellow prop Morgan Howarth, this resulted in the ball being worked across the field from left to right and Rizzelli touching down in the corner.

With Mayfield now rampant, the ball was being given some air with the back trio of Kyle Humphries, Kieran Jackson and Muzamil Javeed. All three benefiting from good work from Jordan Parr and looking dangerous every time Mayfield went forward. Eamonn Duffy also displayed great defence.

Man-of-the-match Callum Corcoran collected his award for his all action display.
