Cricket: Evans and Kaye opening show paves way for win for Heywood Seconds

Date published: 12 June 2018

An opening partnership of 97 between Steve Evans and Jacob Kaye, followed by a clinical bowling performance by spin double act Chris Kaye and Lee Clarkson, paved the way to a convincing victory over Heyside for Heywood Seconds.

Heywood rattled up 189-8 from their 45 overs after the terrfific start.

Evans was first to go for 62 and Kaye Jnr, carrying on his recent good form, made 33 before succumbing 35 runs later.

The only other Heywood batsmen to reach double figures were captain Mikey Grogan (18), Kaye Snr (11) and Clarkson (15 not out).

Heyside, who played a man short, made a good fist of their reply despite an early wicket for James Mills.

Jackson and Robinson carried the score to 85 and raised away hopes of chasing down the Heywood target, but that all changed when Kaye and Clarkson came on the scene.

Jackson was lbw to Kaye for 22.

Robinson was caught by Evans off Clarkson for 54.

Despite 20 from former Ashton player Jon Selby, there was little further resistance.

Kaye finished with 4-38 from 11 overs, Clarkson took 3-33 from 10.3 overs and Heyside subsided to 127 all out.

It was another authoritative performance by the unbeaten Heywood side which gallops on at the top of Division Four  East in the Greater Manchester League.
