Rugby League: Mayfield face a stiff test against Siddal

Date published: 15 March 2018

Mayfield have a stiff test on Saturday afternoon when they face a tough Siddal side in Yorkshire.

Like Mayfield, Siddal lost their opening fixture last week. Mayfield lost at home in a lack lustre performance, and Siddal capitulated at newly promoted Hunslet.

There has been a fierce rivalry over the last few years between the two teams and both will want to be at their best as they attempt to pick up their first points of the season and put last week behind them.

Even at this early stage, Mayfield coachs Calland and Butterworth will be looking to build to the play-offs,  taking nothing for granted.

They acknowledge the game will be a tough one but as always they also believe that they have enough class in the squad to bring the points back over the Pennines. To do this though they will have to improve on last week’s performance.

Butterworth says: “We were too soft last week and ignored the game plan. That won't happen again; there is no better game in which to turn it round than this one at Siddal. All week we have focused on winning and that’s the aim.”

The Mayfield NWML side welcome fellow promoted side Widnes Tigers to the Mayfield Sports centre for what should be a cracking game on Mayfield's newly unveiled pitch.

Coach Dave Harmer and assistant Craig White are relishing the opportunity to be the first open age side to use this new facility.

White said: "Tis is the perfect pitch for our young side it is a huge pitch. I loved playing on pitches like this, they give teams the chance to create space and with a young mobile side like ours they will make the most of every gap they create."

The two sides met three times last season with the Tigers claiming both league wins in two tough fought games, but Mayfield came through in the play-off final with a comprehensive win.
