Hamer Amateur Boxing Club started the new calendar year with saw two new recruits - Charlie Braddock and Samyan Khan - trading leather for the first time when competing on the Macauley Moran Memorial Boxing Show at St Kent's Irish Social Club on Saturday (30 September).

The first to step into the ring was the Hamer prospect, 10-year-old Braddock, who met Bode Hall of Stockport College Boxing Club.

The youngsters were competing in a skills bout in which no contestant gains the decision, and both showed skill and determination.

Both began the first round by using their jabs and using good footwork to move around the ring while throwing fast and accurate lead hand punches to both the head and body.

In round two Braddock showed his intent when he landed a crunching right hand to the jaw of Hall.

The Stockport boxer came back with fast one, two punch combinations and Braddock used the ring to stay out of distance before stepping back into range to offload his own punches.

At one-point Braddock had his opponent on the ropes and he unleashed fast combinations before stepping out of range to make Hall miss. He moved back into range to unload solid punches to the body.

In the third and final round both boxers showed their repertoire of punches.

Braddock began by continuing to land strong hooks to the body as both boxers traded fast punches.

Braddock landed a right hook to the body and Hall immediately cringed and bent over in pain, leaving the referee to administer a standing eight count.

Both contniued trading punches until the final bell.

Next on for Hamer was 12-year-old Samyan Khan, who met Hemedan Rostam of Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club in a skills bout.

Both boxers used their long and rangy jabs to try and establish a foothold in the contest.

The bout was evenly matched and with each landing crisp one, two combinations as they moved around the ring.

Khan kept his opponent at bay throughout most of the third and final round.

Hamer coach Alan Bacon said: “Both boxers will learn a great deal from these contests. Both are coming along well and if they keep improving as they are then maybe we might be looking at another future champion for Hamer."

Former world champion Ricky Hatton gave up his time to help the charity event. Proceeds will go to Manchester Mind.
