Rugby League: Mayfield 30 - 16 Widnes Tigers

Date published: 02 October 2017

The Mayfield NWML side pulled off a stunning victory over Widnes Tigers in the Division Two play-off final on Saturday to become champions.

Wigan opened the scoring after good work from the half backs saw their centre go over in the corner.

Mayfield upped their game, constantly probing the line only to be stopped by dogged defence from Widnes.

A break from the Widnes hooker put his side in the Mayfield danger zone and only a chase by Chrimes prevented the try. However, a speculative pass on the last tackle from the stand off allowed the winger to increase the Wigan lead with a converted try.

Strong runs from Chrimes and Schofield gave Mayfield good field position and when Cole Connolly slipped a beautifully timed pass to the rampaging McDade he raced in for his sides first score. Connolly converted.

Mayfield were unlucky not to score again before half time with Chrimes, James Ainley and Paul Riley going close.

The second half saw Mayfield really get their act together.

McDade and Newsham were instrumental in finding the ground to allow the industrious James Ainley to scoot over for a typical hookers try. Connolly converted to give Mayfield the lead for the first time, a lead they never relinquished.

From then on it was all Mayfield with the forwards dominating their opposite numbers. This allowed the backs the time and space to move the ball around and wear out the Widnes defence.

Newsham grabbed a well deserved try after he cut the Widnes defence with a series of side steps. Connolly converted.

The Mayfied lead was increased when Jordan Parr broke down the left and fed a well timed pass to Chrimes, who raced away from sixty metres to score. Connolly converted.

Widnes tried to lift their game and had some success when Mayfiled gave away an unnecessary penalty. Widnes took the chance and their hooker darted over on the third play to narrow the gap.

Mayfield responded and Cella crashed through the line to seal the game. Connolly adding the two points.

Mayfield were crowned Division Two champions.
