Cycling: East Lancs report

Date published: 16 August 2017

Last week’s racing started very well for the East Lancs with two of  riders winning their respective races on the same evening.

On Thursday, Callum Belfield took part in the three/four category race at the UCLAN circuit near Preston - needing just a few points to secure his upgrade to a second category race licence - and in a tight race where all the riders stayed together, he took the sprint finish in style.

On the same evening 25 miles away in Colne, Ollie Huszar was continuing his blistering form by getting into a winning break of four riders who stayed away ahead of the bunch for most of the race, and then he rode away from his breakaway companions to take the win comfortably.

He has now won three of his last five races.

To complete the road racing results Huszar, Ben Trippier and Matt Jackson all competed in the 55 mile Chronomaster race at Bashall Eaves last Sunday. In a fast race which whittled down the bunch steadily throughout, Trippier, Huszar and Jackson secured fifth, seventh and 15th places with good performances.

The club's time trial riders were in action on the A590 dual carriageway at Levens and Lindale near Grange.

The event was the Wigan Wheelers 10 mile TT on an evening which was a bit blustery but on a fast course good times were anticipated.

The club riders times were:

  • Georgina Cape, a personal best of 25:03 minutes.
  • Karen Bailey, a personal best of 25:34 minutes.
  • Shaun Leonard, an unofficial personal best of 22:58 minutes.
  • Roy Neild, 22:36 minutes.
  • Andrew Kovacs, first time trial and personal best of 25:58 minutes.
  • Jenny Kovacs, first time trial and personal best of 28:58 minutes.
  • Pete Matthew in a course personal best of 28:00 minutes.

In a separate time trial, Dave Ireland clocked  two hours 19:57 minutes for his 50 mile in Cheshire on the J4/8 course in windy conditions.

The club riders also turned out in numbers for the Saturday Beginners Ride and Sunday club runs.
