Cricket: Norden's hopes of a first ever Tanner Cup triumph vanished against Heyside

Date published: 14 August 2017

Norden's hopes of a first ever Tanner Cup triumph vanished in the whirls of BBQ smoke as Heyside proved the better team all round in the final played at Little Hey Street.

It was a superbly staged match, and credit goes to all at Heyside who worked hard to get the game on, the ground having been under water in parts the day before.

Heyside also played superbly to score 220 for nine before bowling out the visitors for 150.

There were some who felt the home total was 20 to 30 short of what might be needed, but Norden never reached the heights when batting, were never really in with a shout, and their reply quickly became a case of waiting for wickets to go down.

Declan Wilkinson and captain Ryan Barnes gave Heyside a tremendous start, and the total was only one run short of three figures when Barnes was trapped leg before by Simon North for 46.

The runs continued to flow, sharp singles mixed in with some powerful hits. Wilkinson, later named man of the match, hit three big sixes on his way to 63 before he was bowled by Greg Butterworth.

Another 40 were added before Bilal Khiljee, on 49, launched a delivery from Malik only to see Dom Humphreys take a catch just in from the boundary.

Max Power was still there, and it looked as though Heyside would get up to around 250, but Norden put the brakes on to the extent that the innings faded away.

Steve Pimm took an ankle height catch to dismiss Liam Garnett, Ben Holt sliced a shot and was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Rehan Udwadia, and Scott Bloor went for a big heave-ho, missed, and was bowled by Malik.

Matthew Chadwick was caught in the deep by Harvey Fitton, Matthew Robinson was caught at backward point by Simon North, and Danny Cashin was stumped by Ashley Gowers off the last ball of the 50th over.

It meant that Dominic Humphreys had taken four for 44 in his 10 overs.

Had Heyside got enough runs?

The reply saw nil in the first over of the reply, but Udwadia then smacked a six and a four to put Norden on their way.

Unfortunately for Norden the way proved to be back to the pavilion.

With only those 10 Udwadia runs on the board Josh Tolley snicked a Khiljee delivery and was caught behind by Max Power.

Fifteen runs later Udwadia was trapped plumb leg befor by Khiljee, and Dominic Humphreys soon followed, caught behind off Danny Cashin.

Scott Bloor trapped Ash Gowers leg before, Harvey Fitton was caught by Matthew Robinson, and Stags reply was in tatters at 52 for five.

Greg Butterworth and Simon North tried to repair the damage, although it looked a hopeless task, and they took the total into three figures before North was caught behind for 21.

Three runs later Butterworth fell to Declan Wilkinson, the ball coming off bat onto stumps, then Steve Pimm offered a soft return catch to Wilkinson who took three for 22 to add to his earlier knock before putting a shoulder out and going off to hospital.

The game was well and truly up for Norden, but there was still time for a cameo knock from Martin Smith who was in his last match before retiring from cricket.

Smith was last man out for 24 (two sixes) after Hashum Malik had gone for nine.

Pennine League president John Holder presented the Tanner Cup to Ryan Barnes. The underdogs had certainly had their day, and fully deserved it.
