Mansfield Town 0 - 1 Rochdale

Date published: 09 August 2017

Callum Camps' spectacular strike earned Rochdale a place in the second round of the EFL Cup on a wet evening in Mansfield.

Josh Lillis saved a Danny Rose penalty with eight minutes remaining to deny League Two Mansfield extra time.

Dale boss Keith Hill made four changes from the weekend, including a debut for summer signing Jordan Williams. Matt Done made his first start since returning to the club from Sheffield United.

With torrential rain battering Field Mill, the game was played at a fast pace as the ball skidded around the surface.

The only goal of the game came in the seventeenth minute when a Dale corner was headed clear to the feet of Camps. The 21-year-old took one touch to control before curling an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner.

Matt Done almost opened his account for the season after springing the offside trap but the striker fired wide when through on goal.

Mansfield, who are expected to be competing at the top end of League Two this season, stepped up a gear and caused the Dale defence a few problems.

Nthle was caught out of position as Omar Sterling-James raced into the area; Niall Canavan on hand to turn the cross behind for a corner.

From the resultant corner ball, Paul Anderson saw his initial shot blocked but as the ball spun up, he volleyed against the post with Lillis well beaten.

The second half saw Dale control the majority of the play with Mansfield restricted to shots from distance and set plays. When they did break through, a combination of good defending and poor finishing kept the score line at 1-0.

Full back Nthle came mightily close when his cross-come-shot crashed back off the face of the bar.

Ollie Rathbone also gazed the woodwork with a low shot to the bottom left.

Mansfield were awarded a lifeline when Niall Canavan tripped Danny Rose inside the area. Referee Andy Madley had little hesitation in awarding a penalty. Rose took the penalty himself but Lillis saved with his feet to see Dale through.
