Boxing: gold rush for Queensway ABC at Hull Box Cup

Date published: 03 August 2017

It was a gold rush for Queensway ABC at the Hull Box Cup in July, as Joe Crawford, Ibrahim Nadim and Muavia Nasim secured gold medals.

First up was Joe Crawford, 14, against a very strong opponent, Louai Ali from O'Dells gym. Louai was this year’s novice champion.

Both boxers were having success in ‘a very good bout’, however Crawford was cleaner in his work. Using his jab effectively. He triumphed to take the win and first gold medal of the weekend for the team.

Next up was 18-year-old Ibrahim Nadim. He was up against another top fighter, Connor Kelsal, whom he had met five times before. Nadim went into the competition three wins to two.

With Connor trailing, he started strong looking to even things up but he was met in the middle of the ring by Nadim's outstanding engine. It was pretty much back and forth for the first two rounds and still quite close going into the third. As the bell went, Nadim stepped on the gas and never came off it, proving too much for his opponent. It was another unanimous, securing gold number two for Queensway.

Last out was Muavia Nasim, 17, looking to get the treble. He was up against Kamrun Sullivan, a strong opponent who came into the match with 50 plus fights.

Round one saw Sullivan trying to rush Nasim, however the Queensway boxer used that to his advantage, spinning him off and making him miss, countering and taking back the centre of the ring.

Round two was the same with Sullivan getting more frustrated at this point, playing into his opponent’s hands.

Going into the third, Nasim was two up and got a little complacent. He started to trade with Sullivan and let the crowd get the better of him, making the round a lot closer than the previous two.

With all three judges going with Nasim, it was the dream end to the weekend for the club with three gold medals.

Hull Box Cup 2017 was the third annual tournament hosted by the Hull Boxing Centre and is the biggest Olympic Style Boxing Event held in the North of England.

Over 400 boxers registered to compete in the tournament this year from all over England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Netherlands, and from as far as Australia.

With over 250 bouts scheduled over the three days, it was the biggest and most successful year for the contest. Organisers are hoping to secure a much larger venue for 2018 to enable the boxer participation to increase even more due to the overwhelming response this year.
