Cricket Heywood defeat Glossop to progress to quarter-finals

Date published: 22 June 2017

Heywood's reward for their fine 62-run victory at Glossop in the second round of the Derek Kay First XI Cup is a home tie in the quarter-finals.

Captain Danny Pawson was the shining light of the batting display against Glossop in baking temperatures with another glowing contribution of 90, as Heywood battled to put a competitive score on the board after winning the toss.

Pawson was in a different league and shored up the batting order despite wickets falling at regular intervals.

He went in at 28-2 and was on the cusp of a brilliant century when playing on 10 runs short, leaving Heywood on 148-9 and looking susceptible to a Glossop run chase.

Grogan and the 15-year-old Hilton put together a vital last-wicket stand of 24, also making sure that the team batted all but four balls of the 50 overs, with the former making a gritty, unbeaten 18.

The total of 172 gave an under-strength Heywood attack something to work with and they responded in determined style.

Andy Dawson had the dangerous Lee Dale caught behind in his first over, after the opener had crashed him for two boundaries, before brother Simon and skipper Pawson made further inroads.

Pawson claimed Daniel Eyre caught behind, and Simon Dawson used the same method to get rid of Dale Pennington before trapping Chris Tipper plumb lbw.

At 41-4, Heywood had taken a stranglehold and that was reinforced 13 runs later when Andy Dawson came back into the attack to make Daniel Senior a fourth victim for wicketkeeper Bobby Cross, who is making a fine fist of returning to the job.

Heywood were well on top but there was always a chance that a middle order stand by the home side could turn the tide. And there looked a possibility of that when James Eyre was joined by Jack Negram.

Heywood’s outstanding catching came to the fore again with the total on 75 when Eyre smashed a Travis Townsend delivery high and straight – only for Andy Kerr to take a superb tumbling catch in the shadow of the sightscreen.

That was the beginning of the end as Townsend claimed two more victims, one aided by a neat catch by Phil Dawson. Hilton got in on the act by getting rid of Negram, and Andy Dawson ended the threat of Will Hargreaves thanks to a third catch by Kerr – this one a slick effort at extra cover, jumping to take the ball as it looked set to sail over his head.

Heywood will now entertain Denton St Lawrence in the quater final on Sunday 2 July.
