Rugby League: GB Police 66 - 0 HM Prison Service

Rochdale Mayfield players James Connaughton and Lewis Ainley played their part as the Great Britain Police Rugby League Team beat HM Prison Service Team at Mayfield Sports Centre.

The game was in jeopardy of being cancelled at one stage due to Prison Service players being held up but the game started 20 minutes late with th Police team looking confident from the start.

The Prison Service struggled to cope with the power and speed of the Police, who took the lead through a try from Dan Scanlon in the fourth minute.

James Connaughton, who had an outstanding game at second row scored the second try.

Chris Sheffield, whose father played for Rochdale Hornets in the 70s, was the next player to touch down for the Police team - the first of four tries for the strong running centre.

Lewis Ainley, Mayfield’s young scrum half caused problems for the Prison Service defence and helping to set up tries in the second half for the Police team that scored 34 unanswered points in the second half.

Gareth Pratt, GB Police Head Coach, said he would have preferred more of a test for his team at they prepare for a tour to Canada in September, but he was pleased to see some new players in the team make impressive debuts.
