Cricket: Norden through to round three of the LCB Knockout

Date published: 12 June 2017

Norden are through to round three of the LCB Knockout after what could only be described as a massive win at Walsden on Sunday.

Norden won the toss and put Walsden into bat for a total of 194 for nine.

The reply was astounding and saw Norden over the line for the loss of only one wicket with eight of the 45 overs unused.

Steve Pimm was the man out, caught by Joe Gale for 12 when the total was on 29.

Josh Tolley and Naveed Zamurad then saw off a succession of bowlers to score 89 and 83 not out respectively, although both were dropped in what became an untidy fielding display by Walsden.

Tolley looked in fine form as the runs flowed, as did Zamurad.

By the time Walsden introduced professional Umesh Karunaratne to the attack Norden had 70 on the board, but there was then a worry that Umesh might repeat his performance of last season at Norden when he took five wickets for no runs.

He was flat-batted by the Norden duo and Zamurad then launched him for successive sixes.

Walsden had no answers and used seven bowlers in a bid to beakthrough.

It was finished off when Zamurad smacked Umesh for a low four.

Walsden’s innings had got off to a poor start. Josh Gale hit a Chris Hartley delivery straight to Chris Humphreys, and Nick Barker was caught in similar fashion by Rehan Udwadia.

Jake Hooson played a grafter’s role, while Umesh played some powerful shots before seemingly settling for singles in two lengthy spells.

Hooson was finally out for 32, caught by Tolley, having faced 83 deliveries.

That made it 109 for three, and the remainder of the innings was really down to Umesh who finished unbeaten on 112 as wickets tumbled at the other end.

Hashum Malik bowled nine tidy overs to finish with two for 19, and Greg Butterworth claimed three for 33 in seven. Chris Humphreys also bowled well, his seven overs costing only 16 runs.

Martin Smith picked up a wicket, courtesy of a catch by Chris Hartley, and Smith did the hard part in as run out which ended the innings of Joe Gale.

Norden will entertain Prestwich in the next round on 2 July.
