Hornets dreaming big with “Middleton Hornets Project”

Date published: 13 April 2017

Rochdale Hornets has teamed up with not for profit organisation Dream Big Sports for the “Middleton Hornets Project”, a new community session that comes on the back of last year’s historic season, in which Hornets clinched their first league title in nearly 100 years.

The partnership between the Hornets Foundation and Dream Big Sports will see weekly rugby league training sessions delivered by Rochdale Hornets first team players for free to children aged seven to 11.

Hooker Jay Lobwein and centre Michael Ratu will deliver the sessions as part of their role as community coaches for the club's Sporting Foundation.

The project, which kicks off on Monday 24 April, will give local children the chance to develop their rugby league skills, meet new friends and take on new, fun and exciting challenges in an engaging and pressure-free environment.

Dale Harris, Dream Big Sports Co-Director, commented: “This is the first session of its kind in this area.

"What a season Rochdale Hornets had last year and if we can use that to encourage more children to take part in sport then why not?

"Dream Big Sports was founded to break down barriers to participation and what better way to do that than to create a free session, using local community facilities which makes it easily accessible and takes away any financial barrier to participation.

“This project is just the start of our new partnership with Rochdale Hornets and the Rochdale Hornets Foundation, a club that is full of character and ambition with the community at the fore front of everything they do. It is a huge step forward for Dream Big Sports and it is a privilege to be working alongside Adam Bates and Alan Kilshaw in such a project that who knows could find a future Hornets star.”

Hornets Coach Alan Kilshaw added: “This is a great incentive which the club and foundation are proud to be a part of.

"One of our main aims is to get more people playing more rugby league, and that's exactly what this project will do.

"We're looking forward to working with local youngsters, not only to improve their ability but also to see the enjoyment they get from taking part in rugby league sessions.

"We wanted to use last year's success as a springboard to encourage local kids to get involved and inspire them to pick up a rugby ball.

"It is a great project for the area and we would like to thank Dream Big Sports for their help in getting this campaign up and running. With our fantastic community coaches working alongside them we're confident it will be a huge success.”
