Rugby League: Leigh Miners 26 - 44 Mayfield

Date published: 10 April 2017

Mayfield travelled to Leigh on Saturday knowing that only a win would do if they were to get their season on track and get up in the all-important top six places and win they did in fine style playing some champagne rugby and flashes of the form that took them through last season.

The forwards were outstanding especially in the first half with Aidan Gleeson coming back into form and Sean Watkins and Sean Mulcahy putting in a good shift in perfect rugby conditions.

The stand out player though was James Mcdade who has been a revelation this season.

A half time score of 4 – 28 had all but sealed the game and Mayfield sat back a little and allowed Miners to show some of their class, though Mayfield won comfortably in the end.

Tries came from Sean Mulcahy, a brilliant Zac Hartley interception and two each from James McDade, Matty Ashton and Sean Watkins.

A club spokesman said: "A good all-round Mayfield team performance with all 17 players playing a major part in the victory and sending the travelling faithful home happy.

"Gleeson, Seta Tala, James Connaughton and James Shaw stood out in the forwards while James McDade and Lewis Sheridan looked good in the backs.

"Wayne English also made a telling a contribution showing he is settling into the team now and becoming a most valuable asset.

"Best on the day was Matty Ashton who did everything at 100% his work rate and commitment to the team was fantastic and he was unlucky not to get his hat trick."
