Boxing: Queensway ABC clean sweep at the Junior National Championships

Date published: 13 March 2017

Queensway ABC trio Zain Ahmed, Ahid Khan and Joe Crawford won their fights at the Birtley Boxing club in Newcastle on Sunday progress to the next round of the Junior National Championships.

Up first was Ahid Khan, who went into the fight as the underdog facing Hendon’s Robeert Dunn.

Khan won the first round comfortably, judging the distance with ease and landing clean shots.

Round two was a completely different story as Dunn regrouped and took the round easily.

The third was a very scrappy round with both boxers having success.

The decision was a split win for Khan but it was very close and could have gone either way.

Next up was Zain Ahmed, who controlled all three rounds with his slick movement and cleaner shots coming out a clear winner.

Joe Crawford was up against a very tall boxer, Harry Dugdale of Grainger Park ABC.

From the bell, it was clear Joe was a class above, catching his opponent at every opportunity.

He won all three rounds, giving him win number three of the day.

Coach John Finnerty said: "This is a big boost for the club and spirits are high as we look to book ourselves a trip to London for the semis and finals.

“We already know who we are up against and it's going to be a tough day for all three that's for sure, so it's straight back in to the gym for a week’s hard graft.

“Positive things coming from the Rochdale boxers as only six lads went through from the whole of the North West and Rochdale had five of them.

“Three from our gym, with Littleborough ABC and Hamer ABC also enjoying success.”
