Heywood, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and Trefoil Guild joined together for a fun Division event. Each unit had to create a mascot for Heywood Division Girlguiding with the specifications set by former Leader and Commissioner for Heywood, Diane Kay.

The units came together at St. James’ Hall for the event. There was a range of mascots including robots, teddies, a banner and a special rag doll. While judges Diane Kay and Barbara Hughes looked at the entries, Senior Section girls with Leader Beth Tennant led a song and dance session to keep everyone entertained.

The judges chose a winner from each of the three competing sections (Rainbows, Brownies and Guides) and one overall winner.

The winning Rainbow group was 9th Heywood (St Margaret's) Rainbows with their mascot GRAB the robot.

Assistant Leader for the Rainbow Unit, Suzanne Woodward, said: "The Rainbows are delighted to have won our section of the Division Arts Competition with our a Robot "GRAB".

The girls voted for a robot as a mascot as it is fun, useful and helps people. The girls enjoyed collaging the boxes using bits of torn-up paper & glue, fun but very messy. The name "GRAB" stands for Guides, Rainbows And Brownies. All the girls were very proud & excited to receive the certificate in recognition of their hard work."

The winning Guide unit was 14th Heywood (Woodland) Guides with their mascot the special rag doll, which represented each section.

The winning Brownie Pack, also winner of the Overall category was 9th Heywood (St Margaret’s) Brownies with their mascot of a Division Banner which can be used at parades and hung up at large-scale events.

Alyson Quinn, Leader of 9th Heywood (St Margaret’s) Brownies, said: "The Brownies each came up with ideas for our mascot, but we couldn't decide on one winner. The banner was a way to display all of our ideas together in one unique display. I am so happy that our banner was chosen as the overall winner. It must have been a difficult choice because everyone's entry was excellent."

Ava Baker, age 9, from 9th Heywood Brownies, said: "I am so happy and proud. Especially because we are the second winners of this competition, which only started last year."

Olivia Taylor, age 9, from 9th Heywood Brownies, said: "I am so proud of winning the shield. We did a lot of our own work and participation and all the Brownies tried hard and that hard work paid off."

Judge, Diane Kay said: "The standard of entries was very high and judging them was extremely difficult. Every unit should be very proud of their entry. Well done to all and congratulations to St. Margaret’s Brownies (overall winners).

"I’m looking forward to next year’s competition".

Division Commissioner, Julie Holt said: "What a wonderful turn out for the second of our annual Division Shield Competition. Once again the entries were of a very high standard. It was obvious how hard the girls had worked, and so lovely to see what Guiding means to them. We had everything from rag dolls to robots. The imagination of these girls has no limits.

"Congratulations to our winners.

"A big thank you to our judges Diane Kay and Barbara Hughes, and thank you to the girls and leaders of the Senior Section for providing the entertainment. Lots of fun was had by all".

Girlguiding gives girls and young women their own space to have fun, be themselves, build brilliant friendships and gain skills.
