Conference spreads the word about support for mental health

Date published: 24 June 2015

Around 100 delegates attended a conference in Rochdale this week, raising awareness of mental health issues and positive mental health.

The event at Number One Riverside was opened by Councillor Janet Emsley, Cabinet Member for Culture Health & Wellbeing at Rochdale Borough Council and speakers included representatives from Public Health, Pennine Care NHS Trust, Rochdale and District Mind and Healthy Minds.

Councillor Janet Emsley said: “We want to mobilise people to help spot the signs of mental health conditions early and make sure support is delivered quickly. Anyone experiencing mental health issues is significantly disadvantaged in our society but there is a great deal we can do to make recovery more possible. Supporting someone in a crisis could begin with something as simple as a conversation that creates a feeling of connection. It is important communities work together to ensure people know that help is available, where they can get that help and what to do if someone they know is at risk."

Inspector Andy Riley from Greater Manchester Police who supported the event said it was an invaluable session: ”Our officers regularly deal with people in crisis who they are called to help and the event was a really positive step towards getting early help for people before they reach crisis point.”

Delegates included representatives from the Samaritans, Police, Pennine Care, Age Concern, the Fire service, Health Watch, CAMHS and Groundwork.
