Rochdale Sixth Form College run Manchester 10k

Date published: 21 May 2015

Students and staff members from Rochdale Sixth Form College took part in the Manchester 10k run, raising in excess of £2,350 for local charity Rochdale and District Mind.

The college’s team of dedicated fundraisers took on the 10k challenge as a way of raising awareness of mental wellbeing in the local community. Students explore mental health and wellbeing as part of the college’s tutorial programme and sessions constructed around mindfulness based stress reduction run through the college’s enrichment programme.

The group were joined by Liverpool based comedian, Jake Mills, who runs the mental health charity ‘Chasing the Stigma’.

A Level student, Eilish Kenny commented: “Being diabetic has put me off signing up for these sorts of things in the past but this year I decided to challenge myself. I know there are people with diabetes and other medical conditions who take part in fundraisers all the time, which really motivated me to do the Manchester 10k run.

"After the run, I felt a great sense of achievement and now have the confidence to sign up to more activities in the future.”

Teaching Assistant, Jack Lyons said: “I was told about the event last year. Having never run more than one or two kilometres before, I decided to start running around October with a view to taking part in the Manchester 10k in May. The incentive of raising money for charity at an official event was extremely motivating and the training has had a really positive effect on my fitness and wellbeing.

"As for the day itself, the atmosphere was brilliant – bring on the next one!”

Students and staff at Rochdale Sixth Form College have already started to sign up for the Rochdale 10km, taking place on 7 July.
