RSPCA shops need volunteers

Date published: 02 March 2015

The RSPCA is currently looking for volunteers for their shops across Rochdale.

The RSPCA currently has eight shops located across the borough, with volunteers being needed for each shop.

Shirley Mellor, shops area coordinator for RSPCA Rochdale said: “We are just putting an appeal out there really to let people know that we need volunteers in each of our shops. We have eight across the borough and one in Todmorden so there is a shop close to everyone really.”

Those who want to help out at a shop would be involved with the day-to-day running of the shop and would work in areas covering window displays, till work, behind the scenes work and customer service.

Shirley added: “We welcome anyone really. People who already have experience in retail sometimes like to come in for a change of scenery or people who are unemployed who want to gain some work experience. We also have mums who come during school hours so they can get out of the house for a bit whilst the children are at school.”

The shops are open between 9am and 4.30pm and are flexible in accommodating their volunteers.

“People can come for a few hours if they want to or can come all day, it is really up to them and what they want to do. Some people will do a morning shift and others will do an afternoon shift but then some people will do something like 10am until 2pm to fit in with other commitments,” said Shirley.

Those who do volunteer at the shops can also do their NVQ in retail or customer service whilst at the shop.

Shirley added: “No day is the same in a charity shop because we never know what stock we are going to get in so there really is something for everybody.”

Volunteer opportunities are available to people aged 16 and over.

Anyone interested in volunteering at any of the shops can email Shirley Mellor at sm.rspcarochdale@btconnect.com or call into the shop and speak to members of staff.
