Ian Sandiford appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester

Date published: 20 December 2014

Ian Sandiford has been appointed as the Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester.

Mr Sandiford was appointed to the role by the Lord Lieutenant Warren Smith.

Speaking about the appointment, Mr Sandiford said: “It is absolutely fantastic. It makes you feel quite humble in a way and the number of people that have been in touch with me since the news was announced has been incredible.”

In the event that the Lord Lieutenant is unable to represent the Queen at engagements and events, the Deputy Lieutenant steps in. This means that in any instance that Mr Sandiford is called to make representation, in theory, he will be representing the Queen.

He added: “I do feel very humbled by it all. It’s very nice.”

Mr Sandiford has been involved with the Rotary Club of Rochdale East for around 10 years and is a past president of the club. He is also a board member and trustee of Springhill Hospice, a member of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal committee and a member of the 41 club.

“I really didn’t expect it at all. They contacted me about it all and then the interviews and things started in May. I was told last Friday (12 December) that it was going to be announced in the London Gazette and then once it is announced it is official. It was then announced on Wednesday 17 December,” added Mr Sandiford.

Mr Sandiford has been congratulated on his appointment by those in fellow Rotary Clubs.

Stuart Sawle, the Rotary Club District Governor, said: “I think it is absolutely fantastic. It is a real privilege and really good recognition for him. It is superb.”

Frank Hauxwell, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Rochdale East, said: “We are absolutely delighted at Ian’s appointment. All of the club are very proud of him. He is well known in Rochdale, not only for his work in retail but for his charity work for a number of causes and this is something that we are all very proud of.”
