Fida Hussain wins Mountain Leader of the Year award

Date published: 20 December 2014

Fida Hussain has won the Mountain Leader of the Year award from Mountain Training.

Fida, from Kingsway, beat off 15 other nominations and received the highest number of public votes to win the award.

Speaking about winning the award, Fida said: “It’s such an honour to win the Mountain Leader of the Year, as it was voted for by fantastic people that I have helped to do various awards over the years.

“It’s an honour to know some lovely people in Rochdale - passionate, enthusiastic people, many who have gone on to pass on what they have learned and given something back to their community. Rochdale has some unbelievable people and it’s been a joy for me to meet them.”

Fida has been using his mountaineering skills within the community for more than 20 years carrying out several projects to encourage young people to take up outdoor activities.

He is involved with delivering the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in Rochdale and also carries out community projects in the area.

Fida added: “I feel very humble and proud that this award is from people I’ve supported. My family, who often see their father and husband away with people, have been so supportive. Without my fantastic family, I would not be where I am today.

“Mountaineering is a passion. I will continue to enjoy taking people and guiding them to enjoy the benefits of walking, staying fit and healthy and gaining qualifications, as well as building their confidence to pick up a map, use a compass, have the right gear and step into the glorious countryside.”
