New Wheatsheaf Centre entrance delayed due to contractor going bust

Date published: 24 November 2014

Work on the new Baillie Street entrance to the Wheatsheaf Centre has been delayed due to the contractor, Globe MSL, going into administration. It was hoped the entrance would be completed in time for Christmas shoppers, however, it will now be next year before the work is completed.

John Searle, Development Director for the Rochdale Development Agency, said: “Globe MSL, the company who were appointed to construct the new Wheatsheaf Entrance, unexpectedly went into administration earlier this year. Rochdale Borough Council has now appointed Styles and Wood to complete this important project, which will make it easier for people to access all the shops in the Wheatsheaf and better connect the different parts of the rapidly changing town centre. The existing Baillie Street entrance and lift will remain open throughout the works, which will be completed next year.”

Asked if the council lost any money when the original contractor went bust and if the new contractor is charging the same price, more or less, RDA/the council refused to answer citing "commercial confidentiality". However, it is understood that the setback has hit the council financially as compensation has to be paid to the Wheatsheaf Centre due to the delay and the new contractor is charging more to complete the work.

Debbie Hernon, Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre Manager, said: “The new entrance is now back on track and due to be open to the public in May 2015 and in the meantime its business as usual at the centre. We can still be accessed via the Baillie Street lift and stairs and will be serviced by an extremely convenient car park on the old bus station site opposite.”
