Advice

Police have been advising motorists on how to stay safe this winter as part of Road Safety Week which is being run by the road safety charity Brake.

Road Safety Week is the UK's biggest road safety event involving thousands of schools, organisations and community groups. Set up in 1997, the event is coordinated annually by Brake each November, and aims to encourage grassroots action on road safety and raise awareness about the part we can all play in preventing tragedies and making roads safer.

Before the event started Inspector Phil Bromley of GMP’s Road Policing Unit said: “We will be reminding motorists to be careful on the roads and looking for those who flout the law by speeding, using mobile phones, or failing to wear seat belts. We’ll also be making sure that children are properly restrained in vehicles.

“The winter checks involve examining tyres, lights, windscreens and wipers to make sure they’re in working order and that the vehicle is fit for winter use. We’ll also be handing out leaflets containing advice on these issues."
