Middleton’s Grand Day Out
Date published: 14 September 2014
People out and about in Middleton yesterday (Saturday 13 September) were given the chance to visit the town's golden cluster of buildings via land train.
The train, which was part of Heritage Open Day, took people around Middleton showcasing buildings, including the Old Boars Head, the Asseton Arms, Edgar Wood’s Arts and Crafts Church and the former Manchester and Salford Bank.
Whilst on board the two-carriage train, those taking in the heritage sites were also given a history lesson surrounding Edgar Wood by none other than the man himself - local actor Colin Meredith took on the role of Middleton’s famous architect. Mr Meredith spoke about Edgar Woods’s history in the town as well discussing a number of the buildings he designed.
Adam Torevell, from Middleton Town Team who organised the event, said: “The train has really attracted the younger generation and has been a big hit with them. It is nice that they are able look around Middleton and get a bit of a history lesson whilst enjoying the train.”
Other activities included children having the opportunity to make Victorian style toys, have their photo taken and printed in an antique style frame and dress up in Victorian style clothing.
In Middleton Gardens there was also face painting, a magician, a bouncy castle and children’s rides.
