Jade Goodyear beats the bullies to succeed

Date published: 18 August 2014

A Rochdale teenager has overcome bullies and family loss to turn her life around and follow her career ambitions.

Eighteen-year-old Jade Goodyear arrived at Rathbone two years ago with no qualifications and only very basic maths and English skills because she had left her school to get away from the bullies.

“When I first came to Rathbone I struggled because I didn’t trust anyone and my confidence was really low because of my past experiences,” said Jade.

“But in time I realised that my tutors were always there for me. They take the time to understand my problems and without their support I wouldn’t have been able to learn what I have.”

Jade has progressed her Maths and English from entry level two to a level two, which is the equivalent of a GCSE between A* and C, and has also progressed to a level two in a Health and Social Care qualification.

“I want to get a job working in care because my granddad died of cancer and before he passed away I visited him in a hospice and saw the amazing care he received which made me want to help other people in the same way. Ideally I’d like to work with children because I think helping young people is something that’s really special,” said Jade.

Jade has gained a work placement at the same hospice that looked after her granddad and her confidence has improved so much she is now peer mentoring other learners at Rathbone Rochdale to help them get back on the right path to.

“The progress Jade has made with us has been remarkable. It hasn’t been an easy journey but she can be really proud of what she has achieved,” said Vicky Sinfield, Centre Business Manager for Rathbone Rochdale.
