Meet and greet event raises money for Cancer Research

A meet and greet event for members of Rochdale Facebook groups has raised money for Cancer Research.

The event, which was held this evening (Saturday 19 April), was organised by Shelly Buxton to help Angela Sanderson raise funds for the charity.

Shelly said: “Originally the event was a meet and greet for members of the Rochdale Facebook groups. Angela then asked me for a donation to Cancer Research so I said I can do one better and decided to do the event as a fund-raiser.”

Held at Shelly B’s café on Drake Street, the event included a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses, including Photography By Karl, Jamilla Paul Hair and Beauty and Gregory Couzens.

“We have had a really good response and have had a lot of help and donations from the local businesses which has been great,” said Shelly.

Angela Sanderson will be taking part in the Relay for Life for Cancer Research in June. The event is an overnight community event full of activities and ceremonies.

Angela said: “My mum died of cancer last year so I am doing it for her. I did the event last year so I am prepared for it. I am a little more prepared than last year I think.”

Angela, who is also on the committee for Cancer Research, described Shelly’s event as “brilliant.” She added: “It is a great event. Shelly has been brilliant organising everything.”

As well as being attended by members of the many Rochdale Facebook groups, the event was also attended by Owen Sherratt of 96.2 The Revolution.

Angela and her team for the relay event have a fund-raising total of £32,000. Currently the group has raised over £2,000.

The fund-raising total for tonight’s event was set at £500 but organisers hope to smash that after raising over £300 before the event even kicked off.
