Two arrested after incident at Tesco

Date published: 20 October 2013

A man and a woman have been arrested after an incident at the Tesco Superstore, Silk Street, Sudden.

The entrance to the store has been cordoned off by police and forensic experts are at the scene.

A 50-year-old Tesco worker collapsed with severe chest pains after chasing a group of youths out of the store. It is understood the man has suffered a heart attack.

He was given first aid by police officers and rushed to hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition.

A group of youths were barred from the store on Friday night for making offensive comments but one member of the group returned late Saturday night. When asked to leave a dispute broke out which involved pushing and shoving and the 50-year-old store worker collapsed after the youth was removed from the store.

Police have arrested a 19-year-old man and 38-year-old woman on suspicion of assault. They remain in custody for questioning.

A police spokesman said: "Just after 11pm on Saturday 19 October 2013, police were called to a Tesco store on Silk Street, Rochdale, following reports of an altercation between a group of youths and members of staff.

"Officers attended and on arrival found a 50-year-old man, who works at the store, had suffered a cardiac arrest. CPR was performed by the response officers, and later an ambulance crew, and the man was taken to hospital.

"He remains in hospital in a stable condition."

A spokeswoman for Tesco said: "We are horrified by this terrible incident.

"Our thoughts are with our colleague and his family, and we will offer them any help and support they need.

"We absolutely condemn acts of violence towards our colleagues, and will be assisting the police with their investigation in any way we can.”
