Flying the flag for St George

Date published: 23 April 2012

The flag of St George was raised at Rochdale Town Hall to mark England’s national day.

Watched by onlookers the Mayor, Councillor Alan Godson, proudly raised the flag against the backdrop of the magnificent building.

The Mayor said: “It is wonderful to see the flag of St George flying outside our beautiful Town Hall.

“Residents across the borough have a deep sense of pride in their country and I’m delighted that we have marked our Patron Saint’s Day in this manner.”

Excellent, St George's Day and the flag being reclaimed from those knuckle-dragging racist EDL types at last. Nazis tried to hijacked our Saint, a Roman Soldier despite him being born in Cappodocia [now Turkey] in 3rd Century of Christian parents who lived in Palestine. The 23 April became St George's Day in 1222 CE to venerate a great man who was known to defend persecuted Christians and refugees. King George VI instituted the Geoge Cross at the hight of the blitz and the war against fascism.

How true your comments are, Streetshack; they also attempted to defile the Union Flag.

Wonder what the chance is of Rochdale Labour Council hoisting the Red Flag outside the Town Hall on International Workers Day or May Day as well? There are many thousands of trade unionists, Labour supporters and progressive left groups in town who'd welcome this symbolic gesture at a time of massive austerity cuts.
As we enter a double dip recession today few will have much remaining faith in The City of London and their 'posh boy' mates Cameron, Osborne and Clegg. Another world is possible.

Or have they abandoned their working class, trade unionist and socialist roots to such an extent the Blairites now stand with right-wing governments who have traditionally sought to repress the message behind International Workers' Day, with past fascist governments in Portugal, Italy, Germany and Spain abolishing the workers holiday, and the Conservative Party, showing their true colours, following suit here in the UK currently attempting to abolish the UK's annual May Day Bank Holiday.
