Snooker marathon to raise funds for Rochdale woman

Date published: 13 August 2011

A lifelong snooker player is to take part in a sponsored snooker marathon to raise money for a Rochdale woman who is in need of special equipment to improve her quality of life.

Paul Marshall, 35, will play snooker for a staggering 24 hours later this month to raise money for 26-year-old Catherine Eves.

Mrs Eves suffers from Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Autonomic Dysfunction and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and is in need in of special equipment.

Friends and family of Mrs Eves recently held a fundraising evening which raised enough money to buy her a special chair to help normalise blood flow and heart rate and support her weak, loose joints.

Mrs Eves also needs a special bed, which will raise to enable her to get out bed without straining her joints and enable her to raise her legs to help her blood flow. A bed of this kind costs well over £1,000.

In a bid to raise money for the bed family friend, Mr Marshall has decided to take part in a sponsored snooker marathon.

Mr Marshall, who has played snooker since he was 6-years-old, said his aim is to:
“Ultimately raise money for a young woman who is in great need of equipment and care to improve the quality of her life.”

He added: “I have a passion for the game of snooker and I saw an opportunity to use my snooker skills in order to fundraise for needy causes within my local church, New Life Fellowship, Milnrow.”

The snooker marathon will take place from 9.00pm on Friday 19 August to 9.00pm on Saturday 20 August at the Littleborough Conservative Club on Peel Street.

Mr Marshall has only ever done one snooker marathon in the past, when he was 11-years-old, he did a 12 hour snooker marathon for the Oldham branch of the National Deaf Children’s Society.

So far Mr Marshall has filled 22 hours of slots to play against various people.

Mr Marshall concluded: “I hope to promote continuous support until Catherine has the full range of equipment and care she needs.”
