Best friends' bake off raises £1,500 for UNICEF Ukraine response

Date published: 04 May 2022

A 10-year-old girl from Heywood and her friends have raised £1,500 for the UNICEF Ukraine response with a ‘best friend bake off’.

Evie Blayney and friends Amelia Hunt and Alyssa Weir held the event at Hopwood Park’s Tree House Café on Sunday 1 May.

The girls came up with the idea when they’d been watching the news and talked about it on the walk home from school, deciding they wanted to try and do something to help.

Originally aiming to raise £200, the Hopwood Primary pupils smashed their target after making and delivering flyers, writing to local supermarkets, making games for the day (guess how many sweets in the jar, guess the weight of the cake and roping their older brothers into doing a penalty shootout game) – as well as baking some delicious treats.

Evie’s mum, Lucy, said: “The girls were great and worked so hard; they looked the part in their uniforms. The local community really came out to support them and they will be donating the money to UNICEF’s Ukraine response as they specifically want to help children and families.”
