Heywood Rotary 2020 enables empty medicine blister packets to be recycled

Date published: 13 April 2021

You can now recycle medicine blister packs, as Heywood Rotary 2020 has joined the Terracycle Medicine Packet Recycling Programme.

The initiative means that you can now drop off your empty blister packs (any brand) and they will be recycled, separating the packets by polymer type before transforming it into plastic pellets to make new recycled products.

You can drop your packs at Blue Rose News in Heywood and Heywood Rotary 2020 will do the rest.

For every blister packet sent in by Heywood Rotary 2020, TerraCycle will donate points to be redeemed into financial donations towards the charity selected by the rotary club - Marie Curie.

TerraCycle is a company specialising in finding recycling solutions for waste which is considered “non-recyclable” through traditional council recycling systems. This includes a wide range of waste such as biscuits and snack wrappers, pens, toothbrushes, contact lenses, baby food pouches, bread bags, toy packaging and personal care and beauty packaging.

TerraCycle launched in the UK in September 2009 and currently runs collection programmes for over 30 types of waste which can’t be accepted by local council-run recycling systems.

The nationwide programme is a collaboration between TerraCycle and the pharmaceutical company behind Buscopan and Dulcolax, providing drop off points across the UK.

Additionally, participating Superdrug pharmacies, including the one at Riverside in Rochdale, also accept the packets for recycling.
