Information on current and forthcoming roadworks and road closures across the borough.


Area: Rochdale
Reason: to reset a gas manhole cover lid in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9.30am-3pm, from Tuesday 24 September - Thursday 21 November 2019, or until the work is completed, whichever comes sooner.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Newgate, from its junction with St Mary's Gate to a point 10 metres in an easterly direction, in an easterly direction only.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is St Mary's Gate, The Esplanade and Newgate.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a leaking water main and install a new fire hydrant in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 6pm, Monday 28 October - 11.59am, Monday 18 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Chapel Gate, from its junction with Dale Street for a distance of 30 metres in a north-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Dale Street, Smith Hill, St James Street and Chapel Gate.
Organised by: United Utilities.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a gully in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7.30am, Monday 11 November - 4.30pm, Wednesday 13 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Belfield Lane, from the junction of Belfield Road to the junction of Milnrow Road.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Entwisle Road, Molesworth Street and Milnrow Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to install an electric main in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am-5pm, Saturday 16 November - Sunday 17 November 2019 and 8am-5pm, Saturday 23 November - Sunday 24 November 2019.
Restriction and location: prohibiting vehicles from turning right from St Mary's Gate onto Newgate.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be St Mary's Gate, Spotland Road, Holland Street, College Road and Newgate.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to hold the 2019 Rochdale Christmas Lights Switch On event.

Expected start and finish:

  • The prohibition of vehicles on The Esplanade, from its junction with South Parade and Newgate to its junction with Vicar's Gate will be operative from 4pm-6pm, Sunday 24 November 2019.
  • The prohibition of waiting on The Esplanade, both sides from its junction with South Parade and Newgate to its junction with Vicar's Gate will be operative from 12noon-6pm, Sunday 24 November 2019.
  • The prohibition of vehicles on the Esplanade, the entire enclosed car parking area south of the main carriageway will be operative from 6am-6pm, Sunday 24 November 2019.

Restriction and location: Temporary closure of:

  • The Esplanade, from its junction with South Parade and Newgate to its junction with Vicar's Gate.
  • The Esplanade, the entire enclosed car parking area south of the main carriageway.

Temporary prohibition of waiting along:

  • The Esplanade, both side from its junction with South Parade and Newgate to its junction with Vicar's Gate.
  • The Esplanade, the entire enclosed car parking area south of the main carriageway.

Alternative route: The alternative route for vehicles using The Esplanade is Newgate, St Mary's Gate and The Esplanade.


Area: Middleton
Reason: to allow access to a housing development site.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 16 July 2018 - 6pm, Wednesday 15 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary cycle lane closure:

  • On the east side of Hollin Lane, from a point 125 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • From a point 245 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 52 metres in a northerly direction.

Alternative route: cyclists will still be able to travel down these road using the main areas of the road, not the cycle lanes.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct the new railway station access.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Wednesday 7 August 2019 - Tuesday 4 February 2020.
Restriction and location:

  • Prohibition of pedestrians from proceeding along the southerly footway of Oldham Road, from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Prohibition of waiting on the northerly side of Oldham Road, from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to repair a frame and cover in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9am-4pm, Monday 25 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Tintern Road, from its junction with Schofield Close and Scout Green for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Whalley Road and Tintern Road.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to repair the pedestrian bridge and allow the safe passage of pedestrians only.

Expected start and finish: 12.01am, Thursday 6 June 2019 - 11.59pm, Monday 16 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Schofield Street, from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Walton Street, Manchester Road, Manchester Street, Hardfield Street and Schofield Street.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate works to a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 6.01pm, Monday 4 November 2019 - 6pm, Friday 1 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street, from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to hold the Heywood Christmas Festival.

Expected start and finish:      

  • The closures concerning L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way and Hind Hill Street will be operative from 3.30pm-6pm, Saturday 23 November 2019.
  • The other closures listed will be operative from 4pm-5pm, Saturday 23 November 2019.

Restriction and location: temporary closure of:

  • Tower Street, from its junction with School Street to its junction with Brunswick Street.
  • St James Street, for its entire length.
  • Garden Street, from a point 1 metre north of Bridge Street to its junction with Bridge Street.
  • Bridge Street, from its junction with St James Street to its junction with Market Street.
  • Market Street, for its entire length.
  • Market Place, for its entire length.
  • Hind Hill Street, from its junction with Bow Lane to its junction with L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.
  • L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way, for its entire length.
  • York Street, from its junction with Queens Park Road to its junction with Market Place.
  • Bamford Road, from its junction with Dawson Street to the junction of Market Place.

Alternative route:

  • The alternative route for the festival area (L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way) will be York Street and Hartley Street.
  • The alternative route for the parade will be Hartley Street, York Street, Queens Park Road, Bury and Rochdale Old Road, Bamford Road, West Starkey Street, Bank Top Street, Cherwell Avenue and Peel Street.

Work being undertaken: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Pennines area.
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.

Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925.

The helpdesk hours are: Monday-Friday 8am-7.30pm and Saturday 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.

Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to repair a collapsed culvert under the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7am, Friday 1 November - 11.59am, Friday 22 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Charles Lane, from its junction with Wellington Street for a distance of 60 metres in a westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Charles Lane, Newhey Road, New Street and Butterworth Hall.

Area: Pennines
Reason: for the protection of the public while work is undertaken on the new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 8am-5pm each day from Monday 26 November 2018 - Monday 25 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of unnamed footpath from Bramhall Close to Elizabethan Way, from Elizabethan Way for a distance of 46 metres in a north westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists will be clearly signed when the closure is in place.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to hold the 2019 Littleborough Christmas Lights Switch On event.

Expected start and finish:

  • The temporary prohibition of vehicles will be operative from 2pm-7pm, Saturday 30 November 2019.
  • The temporary prohibition of waiting will be operative from 12noon-7pm, Saturday 30 November 2019.

Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure to vehicles of Station Road, from its junction with Church Street to its junction with Peel Street. 
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from waiting at any time along Station Road, both sides from its junction with Church Street to its junction with Peel Street. 

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Church Street, Morgan Street, Peel Street and Station Road.

Reason: to facilitate works required to the new housing development site entrance.

Expected start and finish: 9.30am-3.30pm daily, from Monday 25 November - Thursday 28 November 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary prohibition of waiting along New Road, from a point 14 metres east of its junction with Harwood Street, for a distance of 56 metres in an easterly direction.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to install traffic calming features along the carriageway and replace a blocked gully.

Expected start and finish: 9.30am-3.30pm on weekdays, from Wednesday 27 November 2019 - Friday 6 December 2019.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Rakewood Road, from its junction with Syke Road to the entrance to Hollingworth Lake Caravan Park.
