New lift for Manchester Victoria

Date published: 29 September 2019

A new lift will be installed at Manchester Victoria railway station following an ongoing fault with the existing elevator.

The elevator on platform three has been out of action for a number of weeks, raising concerns of accessibility to and from platforms 4, 5 and 6, which are accessed via the lift and a foot bridge with stairs.

Local rail campaign group STORM (Support the Oldham, Rochdale Manchester lines) contacted Rochdale Online with their concerns that people with mobility issues are being overlooked due to the lift being out of action.

One member said: “I regularly use Victoria station. I have some mobility problems and the lift to get me to platform 6 has been out of order for weeks.

“I therefore have to struggle up steep steps.”

A spokesman for Northern said: “We’d like to apologise to any customers who have been affected by the ongoing fault with the lifts at platform three at Manchester Victoria.

“We are liaising with Network Rail to resolve the situation and are working to install a new lift at the station as a matter of urgency.

“In the meantime, we are deploying extra staff to support customers who require assistance, including those with heavy luggage.”
