Pride of Britain winner Ella Chadwick raises £700 for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital with Great Manchester Run

Whitworth’s Pride of Britain winner Ella Chadwick has raised £700 for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) this year after crossing the finish line of the Mini Great Manchester Run on Sunday (19 May).

This year’s Mini Great Manchester Run was the 11th that Ella has tackled, and the fifth she has completed in Manchester.

Her mum, Karen Hughes said: “It is such a fab day and atmosphere.

"I love how Ella cheers on the others running even whilst she’s doing it. She can’t run far as it hurts her legs, but each time somebody cheered her on, she would do a burst of running in between dancing along or high fiving the crowd.

“Ella definitely makes me proud. The Great Run team are fab: they love Ella and make a fuss of her. She bought some Humphrey ears from RMCH’s charity out of her own money to give to David Hart, who’s part of the Great Run team.”

Ella, 11, was born with a rare kidney disease, Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome, surviving over 40 gruelling operations in her first six years before having a lifesaving kidney donated from her grandmother.

She was forced to have both of her kidneys removed and, up until her life-saving transplant, she faced weekly hospital trips for dialysis at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Even after her tough start in life, Ella has never let that stop her, pouring all of her determined efforts into supporting the charity and raising funds to help other sick children.

In October 2018, Ella was recognised with the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Britain awards ceremony and has since had a local race named after her.
