Mayor, Mayoress and MP visit Deeplish Playscheme

Date published: 24 April 2019

Volunteers from Deeplish Playscheme received a big thank you and recognition from the Mayor of Rochdale and Tony Lloyd MP, as part of the final day of the Easter holiday sessions for children aged between five and 11.

The playscheme provided fun and physical activities, including outdoor visits, supported by Rochdale Hornets Community Foundation, Rochdale Football Club and Link4Life.

Children attending the playscheme were awarded certificates for best walking leaders, sports champions, rugby champions, football leaders and best participants and players.

Mayor Mohammed Zaman and Mayoress Naira Zaman visited the playscheme which has been running for 30 years with MP for Rochdale, Tony Lloyd on Thursday 18 April.

Mayor Mohammed Zaman said: “We appreciate that every child was involved and engaged during Easter break with purposeful activities.

“We applaud the centres efforts in giving priority to the children and young people’ activities and despite funding cuts, the centre has made efforts to provide positive activities.”

Tony Lloyd MP and Aiden Hema from Rochdale Hornets Community Foundation presented certificates to the children who participated in the rugby sessions over the two weeks. This was the first time these children had received formal coaching in the sport of rugby.

Sohail Ahmad, playscheme manager, said: “The playscheme has achieved our targets set out this year and the children exceeded our targets involving physical activity by participating in walking, football, rugby and other activities for more than 60 minutes every day.

“Our youngest child, age five, walked 4km around Hollingworth Lake and all the children walked 10km during our visit to Chester Zoo.

“It’s been a brilliant and inspiring two weeks with children and young people.

“We are proud to see children achieving excellence in sports, arts, and involved in physical activities at the centre.

“We are proud of our centres safeguarding and safer provision and we will continue this in the future.

“We are now working on our inspiring summer programme for August 2019.”
