Joint band concert is success for Whitworth High

Date published: 14 March 2019

A combined school and Scout concert, which was subject to a last-minute venue switch, was a great success.

A flood in Whitworth Community High School saw the concert moved to The Riverside in Whitworth.

It featured 2nd Rossendale Scout Group Band, Whitworth School Band and a student choir from Whitworth along with three pupils from Britannia Primary School choir.

Bacup-born opera tenor Sean Ruane, who has helped to instruct both the school choirs, was also present and sang at the concert.

Madeline Kelsey-Lyon said: “I was singing in the choir and I also play clarinet in the school band.

“During the song ‘Seasons of Love’ I had to sing a solo part and Sean commented on my performance afterwards and said that I had done very well.”

Both Josh Dunning and Sam Booth had dual roles because as well as playing with the school band, they are members of the scout band

Sam said: “I played the cornet in both bands and it was very enjoyable, I particularly like the Scout Band’s opening piece ‘Thunder Calls’.”

Josh said: “The concert was very good, but it was hard for me at the end when everyone combined on the stage because I had not got the right music for the piece and had to run back to find it.”
