Runner to complete Cowm Park 'lapathon' to meet 2018 goal of running 3,650km for charity

Date published: 14 December 2018

A runner who set the challenge of running the equivalent distance of Manchester to Beirut for charity earlier this year will be running several laps of Cowm Park Reservoir to help meet his target.

Simon Hall, who works in Rochdale as a landscape gardener and groundworker, set out earlier this year to run 3,650 km to raise as much money as possible for the National Autistic Society after his youngest son was diagnosed with the condition.

To make up mileage after missing a few days of running due to injury, Simon will be running a ‘lapathon’ around the Whitworth reservoir on Saturday (15 December),

The ‘lapathon’ will begin at 9am with Simon running for as long as he can to complete as many laps as possible, with local runners also being invited to show their support and join Simon for any length of time or distance during his challenge.

A 5k event staged by Andems Runners will also be taking place at the reservoir on the same morning at 11am, in memory of Bernadette Bower.

As of Friday (14 December), Simon has completed a staggering 3,314.4km and raised around £5,000 for the charity, documenting his progress via his online diary, Si’s 10k-a-day, the average distance per day of his runs over the past year.

Whilst Simon and his wife Rebecca live in Bacup, most of his runs have centred around Whitworth, where they used to live, and Rochdale, covering distances around some of the local picturesque beauty spots like Hollingworth Lake, Cowm Park Reservoir and Healey Dell.
