Cars damaged after loose pallets fall from van

Date published: 20 June 2018

A number of cars have been badly damaged after wooden pallets fell from a flat-back transit van in Heywood.

Broken pallets were strewn across Egerton Street in the aftermath of the damage, which left at least two cars written off and others badly damaged. One owner was fortunate to have not been in the vehicle at the time as one pallet speared through the windscreen, becoming embedded right into the driver’s seat.

According to the cars’ owners, CCTV footage obtained on the night shows a van driving down the street during the early hours of 14 June, losing the pallets before colliding with one of the vehicles and fleeing the scene, heading towards Pilsworth Road.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Police were called at around 3.45am on Thursday June 14 following reports of a van shedding pallets on Egerton Street, Heywood.

"A silver Iveco Daily flat-back van was travelling along the street when it shed around 20 pallets, some of which fell and damaged parked cars.

"It is believed that the van had been stolen prior to the incident."

Enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8410 quoting incident 293 of 14/06/18 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
