Police appeal after fatal collision at St Mary's Gate

Date published: 16 February 2018

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a fatal collision in Rochdale on Monday (12 February).

Shortly before 3.50pm, PCSOs were on patrol in Rochdale Town Centre.

A HGV had been stopped at the traffic lights on Spotland Road waiting to turn right onto St. Mary’s Gate.

As the white DAF tipper truck moved off, a 52-year-old man ran into the road and was involved in a collision with the lorry.

The man, who has been named as Thomas Grogan, sadly died as a result of his injuries.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct has launched an independent investigation into this incident.

Sergeant Lee Westhead of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our investigation into tragic collision continues and my thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this devastating time.

“As part of our investigation, we need to trace Thomas’ movements throughout the day, so please get in touch if you saw him in the 24 hours leading up to this collision.

“This happened in a busy area, so if you saw the collision itself, or have dash-cam footage of the HGV as it made its way through Rochdale town centre, please contact police.”

Anyone with any information or dash-cam footage is asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741 or 101 quoting the reference number 1293 12/02/18 as soon as possible. Reports can also be made anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
