Whitworth Mayor’s awards

The Mayor of Whitworth, Madeline De Souza, hosted an awards evening on Saturday 8 April.

Ms De Souza wanted an event to celebrate the people who contribute to the community in Whitworth

The Riverside (Civic Hall), Whitworth was the venue,  and gusets enjoyed a hot buffet and entertainment from local singer and guitarist, Graham Shellard along with a special appearance from John Alexander, ‘the singing jeweller’.

The winners were presented with a bespoke award, designed and made by local business Woodquirkz.

Mayor De Souza said “It was a great honour and privilege to be able to host such a fantastic evening and say a small thank you to our wonderful community.

"I would also like to thank the local businesses who generously donated some wonderful raffle prizes and helped me to raise an amazing £856 for my Mayoral charity on the night and thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success.”

Jack Wilkinson Young Achiever Award – Daisi Daniels

Daisi Daniels is a local girl from Whitworth who competes as an alpine ski racer all over the world. Aged only 14, she spends as much time as possible in Italy to train for the winter season. Daisi is currently the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G British champion and has just represented GB and won three medals in Andorra.

Jeff Ogden Services to the Community Award - Brian Furness

Brian Furness took over the chairmanship of Whitworth Historical Society in 2011. His drive, dedication, staunch commitment, and love for the history that surrounds Whitworth has been invested in the museum allowing it to grow, develop and expand. For six years Brian, has been a great contributor to our Whitworth community at the museum, which attracts visitors from all over, and also at Hallfold United Reform Church where he is an active congregational member raising funds for the church and giving up his time for the Whitworth community in general.

Volunteer Award - Emma Glendinning

Emma Glendinning volunteers within the Shawforth community. She has established community cinema evenings at Shawforth Chapel and really helped to establish the building as a hub within the community. Emma also helps as a volunteer to fundraise for St John with St Michael school and she delivers the Whitworth Valley News for Whitworth Sports Council.

Best Business Contribution Award - Anglo Recycling Technology Ltd

Anglo is a very long standing business, the factory in Whitworth has been in production for over fifty years. They have now branched out into recycling, providing matting to several garden centres, and supply to the motor industry.

Anglo provides work for many people within Whitworth and the owner of the company, Simon Macaulay, has instigated the setting up of a youth club and a self-contained unit, free of charge, for use as a weekly drop in centre, extra to the youth club, for the young people of Whitworth.

Bringing Communities Together Award - Samba Dance

Samba raises the happiness levels in Whitworth. Samba currently runs 52 classes every week and helps students to enter competitions too. Additionally, Sam is always eager to volunteer to support local causes, charities and events.

The Pride of Whitworth Award - Dawn and Martin Duffy

Dawn and Martin Duffy run F Duffy and Son Funeral Directors and do a lot of work for Whitworth on a voluntary basis, supporting charities and events and generally being an essential part of the local community.
