Two taxi drivers attacked with hammers

Three people have been arrested in connection with two taxi drivers who were hospitalised after being attacked with hammers.

A taxi driver picked up three passengers in Warrington and drove them to Rochdale. The passengers paid and got out of the taxi on Halifax Road at 11.15am and then attacked the taxi driver with a hammer. The driver was hospitalised.

The second incident happened shortly after when the three men got into a Cozy Cars taxi, the driver took them to Stiups Lane, off Turf Hill Road at 11.30am and he too was attacked with a hammer and hospitalised.

A police spokesperson said: “Police received two reports of taxi drivers being attacked with a hammer on Sunday 21 August 2016.

“Two 18-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of two attempted assaults, criminal damage, two thefts and two attempted robberies.

“All three have been bailed to 24 October 2016.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
