Paul Rowen visits Gracie Fields' former home in Capri

Date published: 19 July 2016

Former Rochdale MP Paul Rowen took a trip to the former home of Dame Gracie Fields when he recently visited the stunning Italian island of Capri.

Rochdale’s world-famous actress and singer spent her later years on the island off the south-west coast of Italy, where she took residence in the now hotel and restaurant, La Canzone del Mare.

Mr Rowen decided to take the special trip to visit a piece of Gracie’s past to get a taste for her life there, and he wasn’t disappointed.

He said: “What a fantastic place and a beautiful setting to remember Gracie Fields.

“Where she lived has been turned into a hotel now, and it is a stunning place where you can imagine she used to relax.

“She also helped commission the bar and restaurant here and it was a dominant part of Capri until approximately 1970 when she let it out to a family.

“It was a wonderful trip.”

La Canzone del Mare was realised on the site of an ancient fort embedded in the rock.  It designed so as to provide a secluded and luxurious retreat to entertain an elite group of friends.

Dame Gracie Fields, DBE (born Grace Stansfield, 9 January 1898 – 27 September 1979), was an English actress, singer and comedian and star of both cinema and music hall.
