Elderly man scared burglars off his roof – less than a month after a terrifying robbery in his home

Date published: 26 May 2016

An 80-year-old man who was frogmarched around his home by cruel burglars and forced hand over his savings has been targeted for a second time in a month – but this time he scared them away.

Rochdale Online reported on 12 May that the man and his wife were subjected to the first terrifying ordeal at their home on Newfield View, where the man was dragged around the house and ordered to hand over cash which he had been saving for his wedding anniversary.

The man and his wife were targeted again on Tuesday morning (24 May) when a male burglar climbed onto the roof and attempted to break in.

Having been shaken up from the first incident, the man acted more quickly and managed to lock the man out before calling the police – which led to the offender fleeing the scene empty-handed.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the incident was logged as an attempted robbery, and have issued a description of the suspect.

A GMP spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the address on Newfield Drive at 11.10am on Tuesday 24 May to an attempted robbery. The offender climbed onto the roof of the property and disturbed the residents who was then able to notify the police.

“The man is described as a while male, approximately 20-years-old, of a slim build. He was wearing dark clothing.”

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
