Rochdale Flood Support Fund raises thousands for flood hit businesses

Date published: 24 May 2016

Thousands of pounds is being handed over to town centre businesses who were worst hit by the floods – thanks to a successful fundraising campaign.

Howard Wilkinson set up Rochdale Flood Support after seeing the extent of the damage done after the Boxing Day floods last year and has raised almost £5,500 with various fundraising events around the borough.

Mr Wilkinson said he was horrified to see how badly businesses were hit in the town centre and set up the fundraising scheme to try and help out.

Various concerts, raffles and other events have been organised by Howard around the borough since the start of the year, including a gig at the Brickcroft Social Club in February.

Mr Wilkinson is now able to hand over £5,460 to help the worst-hit business owners get back on their feet.

He said: “As a business owner myself it was hard to see the small traders clearing out their damaged stock and repairing their devastated premises while being unable to trade and earn money. My heart went out to them so much that I was pretty much moved to tears and I decided to devote some time to trying to help in some way.

“The appreciation for what the people of Rochdale have done to help them out was unbelievable, and showed on their faces, which I will not forget for a long time.”

Mark Foxley, of Rochdale Town Centre Management, said: "Part of the process of getting the businesses back up and running included some fantastic fundraising events. Thanks to Howard Wilkinson and everyone who contributed to the Rochdale Flood Support Fund he set up.

"Despite the devastation for many, spirits remained high, businesses were helping each other recover, and the event has built relationships and strengthened the business community."
