Rochdale students get red carpet treatment at Berlin International Film Festival

Date published: 18 March 2016

Twenty-seven film and media students from Rochdale Sixth Form College have just returned from the Berlin International Film Festival, where they participated in the screening of independent films, attended a red carpet event and gained a real insight into how the film industry works.

For many of these students the trip really was a dream come true, not only did they get to walk on the red carpet that the likes of George Clooney has walked on but they also were able to attend independent film exhibition screenings.

The Berlin International Film Festival took place from 11 February through to the 21 February with American actress Meryl Streep as the President of the Event.

Tom Millngton, Year 13 student of Film Studies, Media Studies and English Literature, said: “The Berlin Film Festival trip gave me a fresh and new take on the world of cinema and I experienced a totally different approach to film making from the mainstream.”

Teacher of Film Studies and Media Studies, Lee Crabtree said: “We had an action packed trip which was truly inspirational for everyone involved. I’m sure this will be a trip that none of us will forget. As a group we had many discussions about the films we viewed and I was very proud of the intellectual and thought provoking questions from the students.

“We even managed to visit the Berlin Wall, Berlin Zoo, Reichstag, Brandenburger Gate and of course the film museum.

“The students all came away with a real first-hand understanding not only about the Film industry but also the history of the German capital. The students will be able to use their experiences from the trip to help them prepare for their upcoming exams.”
