Townhead Junction Update

Date published: 28/04/2008

Gas main replacement works have begun today (Monday 28 April) on Yorkshire Street. As this is not directly a part of the scheme, any queries regarding this work should be made directly to the contact number on the contractors’ sign board.

Work is ongoing within the centre of the roundabout to install the kerbs, drainage and street lighting for the new junction.

Work is ongoing to reconstruct the footpaths on Yorkshire Street heading towards the junction, and to install new ducts and drainage. This will require the road to be narrowed at times for safety reasons.

The area between Pitt Street and Whitworth Road is currently being prepared for the construction of the new footpaths and landscaped areas. This currently involves work to lay the new footways and landscaping.

The existing central reserve in St Mary’s Gate is being excavated in advance of the new kerblines being laid. The subway under St Mary’s Gate, adjacent to Dunelm, has been permanently closed to the public. Over the coming months, this subway will be removed and replaced with safer surface pedestrian crossings. The subway ramps at either end have been filled, and work is ongoing to reconstruct the adjacent footpaths. Pedestrians are advised to use the subway at the end of Cheetham Street, by following signs for this alternative crossing point.

The footpath at the top of John Street, next to M&S Discounts, has been widened and new paving flags have been laid. Work is continuing in the area to install new street lighting. The footway below M&S Discounts is being excavated to allow for a new crossing point to be installed at the top of John Street.

A new road layout has been in place since Monday 17 March. New lanes have been introduced, which are being temporarily marked by cones. John Street has been reduced to one lane on the approach to the junction, and Whitworth Road and Yorkshire Street have also been narrowed for safety reasons. Please see the plan below for more information.
